Hi there,
In the race to build fusion reactors, a new set of startups are building the infrastructure layer they run on. Toronto's Daedal Systems, led by an ex-General Fusion employee, just raised $5.7M to build fusion energy's measurement platform. We look at what measurement unlocks, and why betting on the plumbing, not the reactor, could pay off.

What happened: Daedal Systems raised $5.7 million to build the missing measurement infrastructure for fusion energy. The mission: build standardized diagnostics for fusion reactors to bring speed and trust to the rapidly-growing fusion industry.
Founder and CEO Henry Gould spent three years building plasma diagnostics in-house at General Fusion before founding Daedal to solve the problem across the industry.
The tech: Fusion reactors create energy by fusing particles together, releasing massive amounts of energy. The reaction happens in super-charged gas called plasma that reactors need to keep at a constant temperature.
Daedal is developing diagnostic tools that measure the temperature, density, and behaviour of plasma in fusion reactors. Their platform can adapt to the different reactor types currently being explored.
Why it matters: Fusion startups are spending valuable engineering cycles building these diagnostic tools in house, pulling time and focus from developing the core reactor technology.
Custom measurement also makes it difficult to benchmark results - exactly the evidence investors need before committing more capital.
Validating plasma data has no shared standard yet - a gap identified by the US DOE as one of fusion's most critical, yet under-invested, bottlenecks to commercial power.
What's the context: A growing cohort of industry veterans is spinning out of fusion startups to build picks and shovels for the sector.
Proxima Fusion recently raised €140 million to produce superconducting tape for fusion reactors. But most of the supply chain is still focused on hardware, fuel, and power supplies, with just a handful of companies working on measurement.
What's next: Daedal is betting on fusion infrastructure, not a specific reactor design. The company has signed MOUs with fusion startups like Stellarex Energy and Marathon Fusion, and will use the new capital to put prototypes in the hands of pilot customers.

Ocean protections: The federal government also announced over $1 billion to protect Canada's oceans, calling out the increased tanker traffic off the BC coast and the need for incident response and mitigation.
New EU deal: The EU and Canada will announce details of a new, expanded partnership later this month with low-carbon energy and cleantech at its core. The draft text, reported by POLITICO, calls out alignment on carbon pricing, COP31, critical minerals and cleantech supply chains.
Dumping duties: Canada rolled back anti-dumping duties on some solar modules and components from China, opening up the Canadian market after more than a decade.
The tariffs stem from complaints by Canadian manufacturers that Chinese components were being dumped at below-market prices.
Nuclear Prairies: Saskatchewan will explore building two large nuclear reactors, aiming to have the first online by 2042 and generating 2.6GW by 2050.
Who pays for data centres: Hydro-Quebec is seeking higher electricity rates (to ~13 c/kwh) for large data centres to mitigate the impact on ratepayers.
Municipalities in Alberta are also running into public concerns over data centre power and land use.
No place for abatement: Stakeholders strongly opposed including projects to decarbonize fossil fuel activities in Canada's Sustainable Finance Taxonomy. The consultation flagged concerns about extending fossil fuel lifecycles and creating stranded assets.
Efficiency upgrades: The feds announced over $66 million in funding for sustainable affordable housing and community financing for energy efficiency programs like on-bill financing.
